Where the numbers come from
Groceries, beer and wine are the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics’ published average prices, the Midwest figure where there is one, and each line says which month. Gas is the U.S. Energy Information Administration’s weekly Midwest average, with the week. They are averages, not the tag at your nearest store. Tickets, tips and restaurant prices are our estimates and are marked grey. Tap any amount to correct it.
How much meat per person
Our rule of thumb for a cookout: about half a pound of raw meat per adult, and kids under twelve count as half. A game-day crowd runs closer to two-thirds of a pound; with plenty of sides out you can drop to a third. Those are raw weights.
The lines people forget
On a night out, the tip and the tax: Indiana’s 7% sales tax and a 20% tip add more than a quarter to a restaurant bill. On a day trip, gas, and at a state park, the gate fee is per car, not per person.
